Habitat:

In spring, the queen will emerge and begin to build a nest from plant fibers that she chews, making a type of paper. The aerial yellow jacket will build a nest that is exposed (attached to buildings or in trees), whereas the vespula species will build a nest that is concealed, usually underground.

Food:

Yellow jackets are scavengers of human food and can be found surrounding trashcans or picnic sites. Yellow jackets also feed on nectar, but they depend primarily upon insects, meat and fish for nourishment.
