Common Fly

 In Bug Program
Name: Common Fly
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Diptera
Family: Muscidae

Habitat:
Near animal manure, garbage, or exposed food.

Food:
Houseflies feed on feces, open sores, sputum, and moist decaying organic matter such as spoiled food, eggs and flesh. Houseflies can take in only liquid foods. They spit out saliva on solid foods to predigest it, and then suck it back in. They also regurgitate partly digested matter and pass it again to the abdomen.

Method of Travel:
Flying and Crawling

Prevention:
1. The key to preventing flies is limiting the opportunity for flies to feed and breed on decaying vegetation, garbage and general sources of rot.
2. Good sanitation is the basic step in all fly management. Whenever possible, food and materials on which the flies can lay their eggs must be removed, destroyed as a breeding medium, or isolated from the egg-laying adult.
3. Killing adult flies will reduce any infestation, but elimination of breeding areas is necessary for good management.
4. Garbage cans and dumpsters should have tight-fitting lids and be cleaned regularly. Dry garbage and trash should be placed in plastic garbage bags and sealed up. Wet garbage should first be wrapped in old newspaper and then put in plastic garbage bags.
5. All garbage receptacles should be located as far from doors as possible. Opening to buildings should be tightly screened with a screen having a mesh no larger than 12 to the inch for the larger flies and 18 to the inch for smaller insects.

Steps to control:
1. Fly traps may be useful in some control situations. They require a material attractive to flies. They are most effective when used to supplement other management techniques.
2. Electrically charged screens and traps are also available, but can be used effectively only in certain areas.
3. The application of an insecticide can be made to surfaces where flies rest and breed. A thorough application is necessary to cover all areas where flies may land to rest. Insecticides are only effective when used to supplement other management techniques.
