Habitat:
Deer flies are often found in damp environments, such as wetlands or forests. They lay clusters of shiny black eggs on the leaves of small plants by water.
Food:
While male deer flies collect pollen for food, female deer flies feed on the blood of cattle, horses, mules, hogs, dogs, deer and other mammals, including humans. The flies usually attack humans along beaches, streams, ponds, lakes and around woods and dirt roads near large bodies of water.
